CONNECTING THE 1605WB TO YOUR RAILROAD

This unit has been tested prior to shipment, and is in working order. READ INSTRUCTIONS THROUGH BEFORE CONNECTING. Your order contains, a handheld walkaround with 10' coiled cord,  and a 1605WB controller with a piece of hook-and-loop fastener to hang the handheld unit. This is the basic system. More hook-and-loop fasteners can be purchased from Radio Shack  (#64-2360 or 63-2345) for attaching to the layout when not in use.

Connect two (2) wires (16 gauge or larger) from the track to the two (2) screws on the rear of the 1605WB controller. Plug one end of the coiled cord in the handheld and the other end into the phone jack on the 1605WB controller.  Now your ready to operate. See Fig.  1.

BASIC  THROTTLE  CAB  HOOKUP

This system is expandable by purchasing as many Remote Stations (RS8) as required for the number of control points needed on your railroad. The remote stations are interconnected with variable length cables in 5 foot increments. (C6XX -- XX being the length, C605,C610 ETC.).  See Fig.  2.

Fig.  2
MULTIPLE  STATION  HOOKUP

Connect one end of the cable  (C6XX) to the 1605WB controller and connect the other end of the same cable to one of the connectors  on the remote station (RS8) and repeat from station to station. The connector on the front of the remote station (RS8) is where the handheld walkaround would normally plug in. See Fig.  2 or 3.

NOTE:  Plugging two handheld units into
one cab circuit will impair operation.

TWO  DIRECTION  CAB  HOOKUP

If the cable has to go in two directions, simply use one of the remote stations (RS8) as a junction point by using the connector on the front to go in the opposite direction. See Fig. 3. Any combination of cable connections are interchangeable.

Any cables can be interconnected to achieve longer distances, with modular couplings (MC6). See Fig. 4.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MODEL 1605WB

1 - Turn THROTTLE and MOMENTUM control to minimum position  (full CCW) and PULSE HEIGHT control fully CW (max). Set the RELEASE/COAST switch to REL. Turn power on.

2 - PULSE HEIGHT setting is adjusted to trim operation of individual locomotives or trains.

3 - With the MOMENTUM control set to minimum (CCW) you have direct control of the train by the THROTTLE. Advance the THROTTLE control, (CW) until the locomotive just starts to move. The loco could vibrate depending on the type of motor it has. At this time full height pulses are applied to the output. Turn the PULSE HEIGHT control CCW until the loco just starts to smooth out. Advance the THROTTLE control very gradually, and the locomotive will begin to move, and move faster as the THROTTLE is advanced to full speed. There will be pure D.C. at the output once the THROTTLE output is above the PULSE HEIGHT setting. (This is an internal function, and not noticed externally). Turn THROTTLE to minimum.

4 - Set the MOMENTUM control to #3. Advance THROTTLE to desired speed. Power will be applied to the locomotive gradually and automatically. If the loco appears to be sluggish in starting, increase the PULSE HEIGHT control (CW) a bit. Turn THROTTLE off and the loco will slow down automatically to a stop. MOMENTUM can be set to any desired amount.

5 - Leaving the MOMENTUM control set to #3, advance  THROTTLE to desired speed and wait until the train is running. As the train is running, depress the BRK button and the train will gradually slow down and come to a stop, if the BRAKE button is held long enough. Releasing the BRAKE button, will allow the train to resume acceleration to the speed set by the THROTTLE control. The amount of acceleration and deceleration will be determined by the setting of the MOMENTUM control. If the momentum is set to off (CCW), then the braking and acceleration will be very fast (direct control).

6 - Again as the train is running, if the RELEASE/COAST switch is set to CST the train will keep coasting at that speed unless the BRK button is depressed. As the BRK button is depressed and released, the train will slow and assume new slower speeds. If the RELEASE/COAST switch is set to REL, the train will speed up or slow down to a new speed, which is set by the THROTTLE control. In using the controls in different combinations, the handheld can be operated in various ways.

There is an internal circuit breaker that will release when more than 3 amps ( or 6 amps for the 6 amp unit) is sustained for a short period, or a short has been encountered. The circuit breaker will reset itself automatically after a brief period. The reset time will depend on the amount of heat that is accumulated controller.

Our hope is that you have many enjoyable hours of operating fun.
